Karen Bailey, PhD
GSS co-PI and Science Communications Instructor
Dr. Karen Bailey is interested in human-environment interactions, climate change, and sustainable rural livelihoods. She is an interdisciplinary environmental social scientist and combines social science research with environmental and ecological data to understand feedbacks between communities and their environments, how we can build resilience to climate change, and how to support landscapes that meet human needs and sustainability goals. She also has an emphasis on justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in environmental fields and STEM more broadly and is committed to research that supports, amplifies and engages the most vulnerable among us. Dr. Bailey is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder

Nnenia Campbell, PhD
GSS Co-Pi - Evaluation Lead
Dr. Nnenia Campbell is Deputy Director at the Bill Anderson Fund and a research associate with the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado Boulder. Campbell’s work with the Bill Anderson Fund supports leadership, professional development, and research training among historically underrepresented minority doctoral students studying hazards and disasters. Her work with the Natural Hazards Center translates empirical research on the social aspects of disasters into tools and information products designed for practitioners and decision-makers, emphasizing inclusive engagement.

Adrienne Hampton, MPA
Leadership Instructor
Adrienne Hampton (she/her) was a GSS Oceans Fellow in 2018. Hampton’s background stems from cross-cultural conversations to foster engagement and belonging in public policy, health, climate, biodiversity conservation, education, and the arts. Adrienne Hampton holds a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Washington as well as a certificate in Climate Change and Health from the Yale School of Public Health. She has also served in positions to advance equitable frameworks for fellowship programs, change management initiatives, and creative spaces of belonging. In addition to supporting GSS, she is the Policy, Planning, and Innovation Analyst for Kitsap County Public Health District in Washington State.

Mia Murray, BA
Assistant Program Coordinator
Mia Murray (she/her) was part of the 2023-2024 RaMP-UP cohort in Panamá at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. She helped pilot the program, “Guardianes del Agua”, which used aquatic macroinvertebrates to study stream quality in the Panama Canal Watershed alongside sixth grade students and teachers from the Colón province. Born and raised in Maine, she fell in love with the outdoors after spending many K-12 school field trips at her local conservation trust. For her undergraduate degree, she studied Environmental Science and Hispanic Studies at Wheaton College (MA). Through research, she wants to increase science accessibility by continuing projects that center community outreach and education. In addition to working as an Assistant Program Coordinator, she also serves on the GSS Early Career Steering Committee.

Kirsten Rowell, PhD
Director / PI
Dr. Kirsten Rowell is a curious “noticer” of her environment. Her academic career is centered on understanding how human engineered changes to the planet have affected the way aquatic species grow and live. Her research has been focused on fisheries responses in the Gulfs of California to the over allocation of Colorado River water and how ancient peoples have developed sophisticated aquaculture practices that increased clam productivity on the shores of the Pacific Northwest. She has a Ph.D. in Historical Ecology from the University of Arizona and a Master's in Aquatic Ecology from Northern Arizona University.

Martha Walker, MS
Program Coordinator
Martha joins the Global Sustainability Scholars team with a passion for increasing accessibility and diversity in the environmental realm. After completing her Bachelor’s in Environmental Science at Colorado College, she worked as an environmental educator and mentor in Illinois, Oregon and Massachusetts creating more inclusive environmental science curriculum for students of all ages and backgrounds. She recently earned an MS in Environmental Leadership from Colorado State University, where her degree focused on implementing collaborative, interdisciplinary, and innovative approaches to cross-cultural conservation challenges.
